The balance weights are placed on each side of the ice ax blade. When hitting, the ice ax's balance improves for precise anchoring in hard ice. The geometry of the balancing weights optimizes the interlocking of the blade in the slots. The balancing weights are removable to adjust the technicality of the ice ax according to the expected climb.
